Quality assurance and traceability
The importance of traceability
Traceability to national standards is an important point that affects the reliability of measurement results. If you use measurement equipment for which traceability has not been established, the reliability of the measurement results will be lost. In order to conduct domestic and international transactions smoothly, it is important to use measuring equipment that has established traceability to national standards.
Mitutoyo has calibration institutes with dedicated staff not only in Japan but also at local subsidiaries around the world, and we have a thorough system in place to ensure traceability so that our customers can use our measuring instruments with peace of mind.

Mitutoyo's quality assurance system and traceability system diagram
Mitutoyo owns length standards such as optical frequency comb devices that are directly connected to Japan's national standards. By calibrating the standards used to calibrate measuring equipment, Mitutoyo can calibrate the various measuring equipment used by customers. We establish and maintain traceability.
We also carry out temperature calibration operations, which are essential for highly accurate length measurements, as well as establish and maintain traceability in the fields of test equipment such as hardness and vibration.
ISO/IEC 17025 accredited calibration services
Mitutoyo's domestic and overseas subsidiaries are ISO/IEC 17025 certified by certification bodies and provide measurement equipment calibration services around the world. In Japan, we have established a traceability and quality assurance system for Mitutoyo products to national standards based on a length traceability system based on JCSS. Through these efforts, we will earn the trust of our customers and contribute to their business development.
ISO/IEC 17025 certified businessQuality management in accordance with ISO 9001
We address quality control and quality assurance head-on, operate a company-wide quality management system that complies with ISO 9001 requirements, and strive to maintain and improve it.
Japanese Industrial Standard mark certified products
We have obtained JIS mark display certification based on the JIS mark display system. Among our calipers and micrometers, the applicable products display the JIS (Japanese Industrial Standards) mark.
Product safety and CE marking
Mitutoyo products are tested for product safety in accordance with European Union directives and display the CE mark.
We also test equipment that uses lasers in accordance with related safety standards, and are working to ensure that our measurement equipment can be used safely.
What is CE marking?
This mark is required when exporting or selling products within the EU, and products cannot be distributed within the EU without the CE mark. The CE mark can only be displayed if it complies with the safety regulations stipulated by European directives, but the safety regulations that comply with vary depending on the product. There are four main directives that apply to the measuring instruments we sell: the EMC Directive, Low Voltage Directive, Machinery Directive, and RoHS Directive, each of which has the following characteristics.
- EMC Directive (Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive)
Emitted noise is stipulated to prevent equipment from malfunctioning due to noise, or from causing malfunction to other equipment. Therefore, most products that use electricity are subject to this directive, from those that run on batteries to those that use household electrical outlets as power sources.
- Low Voltage Directive
This directive is intended to prevent the risk of electric shock and fire caused by electrical leakage caused by product defects or malfunctions. This applies to products that use voltages of 50 V to 1000 V AC and 75 to 1500 V DC.
- Machinery Directive
Machines that operate under electrical control have the risk of injuring people when the machine moves. Therefore, it is stipulated that danger to people be avoided by installing safety control equipment and sensors, or separating people and machinery.
- RoHS Directive
This is a directive regarding the restriction of the use of specific hazardous substances contained in electrical and electronic equipment. The specific hazardous substances are as follows.
- lead
- cadmium
- mercury
- Hexavalent chromium
- Polybrominated biphenyls (PBB)
- Polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE)
- Bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP)
- Butylbenzyl phthalate (BBP)
- Dibutyl phthalate (DBP)
- Diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP)
Please refer to the following regarding our products' compliance with the European RoHS Directive.
Safety standards based on these directives have standards for each product or product group, and are established as harmonized standards for the directives. Products must be safely designed and tested in accordance with these standards.
Our products comply with these requirements and are shipped and sold with the CE mark displayed.
